Using Tngl Cards for Successful Mentoring Sessions: A Fun and Effective Approach for Designers

I have used Tngl cards successfully in mentoring sessions for professional designers in Finland. Mentoring is a peer support method that’s based on sharing experiences and learning from each other.

Tngl cards were piloted in educational EEVI program which was held during 2021-2022 when Covid-19 pandemic restrictions were affecting the performance of small companies and creative professionals. EEVI was a joint program by Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Ornamo Art and Design Finland and Raitala Music Ltd, funded by Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council.

For my one-to-one mentoring meetings, I selected twenty work-related cards from Tngl’s Happy game. We started our first sessions asking each other questions that randomly came out from the selected pack. It was a fun way to start a conversation with someone you have never met before. With selected work related questions, we got straight to the point, and it felt a natural way to jump into the subject without wasting the valuable time together.

“How do you see yourself in five years?” worked perfectly with an entrepreneur who naturally started talking about developing her business plan. Or “What are your top priorities right now?” would lead us talking about how to fit work and family life together, for example. It is great to have that little push for conversations by Tngl cards.
